Start for freeBudva is located on the Adriatic coast of Montenegro and is well connected by road, air, and sea. Here’s how you can get here, along with some local tips to make your journey smoother.
By Plane:
The nearest airport is Tivat Airport (TIV), just 20 km from Budva. It’s the most convenient option, especially in summer, with seasonal and regular flights from many European cities. However, since it’s a small airport, flights can be limited outside the peak season.
Local tip: If you’re flying into Tivat, try to get a window seat—the aerial view of the Bay of Kotor is unforgettable!
Podgorica Airport (TGD), about 65 km from Budva, is larger and offers more international connections year-round. From there, you can rent a car, take a bus, or arrange a transfer to Budva.
By Car:
Driving to Budva is a great option if you’re coming from neighboring countries like Croatia, Serbia, or Bosnia and Herzegovina. The roads are scenic, but keep in mind that they can be narrow and winding, especially in the mountains.
Local tip: During the summer, traffic can get heavy on the coastal roads—plan your trip early in the morning or in the late afternoon to avoid the rush.
Also, if you’re arriving from the north (via Kotor), you’ll pass through the Sozina Tunnel, which shortens the route. Tolls are minimal, but be sure to carry some cash or a card.
By Bus:
Budva has a central bus station with frequent connections to and from major cities in Montenegro, including Podgorica, Kotor, and Bar. There are also international lines from Belgrade, Sarajevo, and Dubrovnik.
Local tip: Buses can be a bit late and don’t always follow strict schedules, so it’s a good idea to arrive a bit early and be flexible with your plans.
By Taxi or Private Transfer:
Taxis and private transfers are available from both Tivat and Podgorica airports. While more expensive than public transport, they offer comfort and convenience, especially if you’re traveling with luggage or arriving late at night.
Local tip: Always agree on the price in advance or ask for the meter to be turned on. For airport transfers, pre-booking a reputable service is usually cheaper than grabbing a taxi at the terminal.
By Boat (summer only):
In the summer months, there are boat lines and private excursions connecting Budva with nearby coastal towns like Bar, Petrovac, and Herceg Novi. This can be a scenic and enjoyable way to travel.
Local tip: No matter how you choose to travel to Budva, try to pack light and keep your schedule flexible—Montenegro’s charm often lies in the unexpected detours, scenic stops, and spontaneous local encounters along the way.
